Getting A GPU With Just 8GB Memory Is Not Viable In 2024 is a post from Tech4Gamers - All About Technology And Gaming News

Story Highlight
  • Inadequate VRAM can cause frame drops and blurry textures, especially when gaming at higher resolutions or using effects like ray-tracing.
  • Even at 1080p resolutions, 8GB of VRAM is no longer sufficient for many modern games.
  • A high-end GPU should have a minimum of 12GB of VRAM to play games at 1440p or 4K high refresh rates.

While there are many specs and factors to balance across your PC, VRAM is one of the most important ones. Over the years, the gaming landscape has changed quickly, with game developers now emphasizing graphically stunning games at higher resolution.

While it’s still up for debate, many gamers think that 8GB of VRAM on a GPU is sufficient to run recent games. In my opinion, this is no longer the case.

Why it matters: Both Nvidia and AMD continue to sell 8GB graphics cards, marketing them for 1080p gameplay. However, these GPUs are often bottlenecked by their limited VRAM.

What Does VRAM Mean?

A graphics card’s built-in memory is known as video RAM or VRAM.

It stores the textures and picture data seen on your screen. If your graphics card has more VRAM, it will be able to run more demanding games and handle textures with higher resolutions.

8GB VRAM Is Quickly Becoming Obsolete

What matters most in this situation is the kind of games you want to play and the graphics settings you want to use.

The need for VRAM rises along with the popularity of graphically demanding games. Although 8GB of VRAM was considered sufficient not too long ago, this is no longer the case with current-generation video games.

More than 8GB of VRAM is needed for games like The Last of Us Part 1, Ratchet & Clank, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Resident Evil 4 Remake, etc., to run smoothly at all resolutions.

Developers are pushing the boundaries of graphical fidelity with Unreal Engine 5, ray tracing, and detailed textures today. All of this requires more than 8GB of VRAM, and modern cards that come with this amount of memory are often cutting it too close, offering a barely playable experience.

MSI Ventus GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 2X BLACK OC
The GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Is Held Back By 8GB of VRAM.

12GB of VRAM Is The New Minimum

Consider carefully before buying a new graphics card.

Any brand-new gaming setup should avoid a card with just 8GB of VRAM, but using a 10GB VRAM card also makes no sense. 2024 is not the year to invest in GPUs like the RTX 3080 10GB or the RX 6700, even though they may be excellent individually.

When playing games at 1440p, modern titles already use more VRAM than 8GB or even 10GB in many cases. Furthermore, you won’t be able to maximize the settings without enough VRAM if you intend to upgrade to 4K eventually.

Any modern card, even for 1080p, is best equipped with 12GB of VRAM today. This is especially true at 1440p or 4K, two resolutions that have become quite popular in recent years.

It’s always best to invest in a card with at least 16GB of VRAM if you intend to play at 4K resolution. This segment of GPUs would set you back a minimum of $700-800 but would ensure that you are not limited when handling games at higher resolution.

Final Thoughts

While 8GB memory might get you by in many games today, graphics cards with this much VRAM have no hope of being viable options for longevity.

Consider a highly anticipated title like GTA 6 that is seemingly aiming to do things never done before. I doubt 8GB of VRAM will be enough for those looking to experience this game in all its glory on PC eventually.

By then, I hope to see the industry moving beyond 8GB of memory. This amount of VRAM should be reserved for the cheapest graphics cards, with 12GB being the minimum moving forward.

Graphic card manufacturers are also somewhat to blame here. Both AMD and Nvidia have been stingy with VRAM, especially on the lower end. However, the former is known to offer a good amount of memory for mid-range and higher-tier GPUs.

In my opinion, 12GB is the new minimum for 1080p and 1440p gameplay. For 1440p and 4K gaming, on the other hand, 16GB of memory seems like the sweet spot for games coming out today and in the near future.

Story Highlight
  • MSI and AMD have worked together to produce graphics cards for many years.
  • The former seems to be more interested in working with Nvidia on future graphics cards.
  • However, MSI will continue to make motherboards for AMD’s Ryzen processors.

Being the second-biggest graphics card company in the world, AMD works with various board partners to produce custom models and ship its GPUs around the globe.

Among these, MSI is one of the biggest, using its worldwide influence to distribute graphics cards in numerous countries. However, it seems AMD has just lost MSI’s partnership, with the latter confirming a focus on Nvidia GeForce moving forward.

Why it matters: AMD is gearing up to launch RDNA 4 graphics cards later this year but will not be able to rely on this board partner for custom models.

MSI Radeon RX 6700
MSI Made Several Models For Different RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 Cards.

The situation first caught everyone’s attention when Hardware Unboxed tweeted about missing listings of MSI Radeon RX graphics cards.

He pointed out that all of the board partner’s Radeon GPU models had been discontinued out of the blue. This prompted HardwareLuxx to reach out for a response, and he received an interesting reply from MSI.

The company pointed out that it is focused on Nvidia GeForce products as far as graphics cards are concerned.

Our focus at the moment is actually more on RTX cards.

-MSI

However, it has not entirely cut ties with AMD. MSI remains a partner, particularly in the motherboard market, producing various boards for AM5 processors like the Ryzen 7000 and upcoming Ryzen 9000 lineups.

This situation may also explain why MSI partnered with Intel for its Claw handheld. It seems that the former is no longer on amicable terms with the Radeon branch of AMD’s business.

This marks one less partner for AMD to rely on, but with the likes of Sapphire, Gigabyte, Asus, and more still around, it remains to be seen how big of a loss this will be.

Important GPU Key Terms

When shopping for a graphics card, it is wise to keep the following key terms in mind.

  1. Stream Processors: Stream processors, found in AMD GPUs, are small processing units that handle individual data elements concurrently. They are responsible for executing parallel tasks in graphics rendering and other computing workloads.
  2. VRAM (Video Random Access Memory): High-speed memory on a GPU used to store textures, frame buffers, and other data required for rendering graphics, separate from a computer’s main system RAM.
  3. TDP (Thermal Design Power): The maximum amount of heat a GPU is designed to generate under a heavy workload, often used to determine the optimal cooling solution for a graphics card.
  4. Overclocking: The process of increasing a GPU’s clock speeds and voltages beyond their stock settings to achieve higher performance, often at the risk of increased heat, power draw, and potential stability issues.
  5. Rasterization: The process in GPU rendering where 3D objects are converted into 2D images composed of pixels, a fundamental step in generating graphics on a screen.

How We Picked The Best RX 7800 XT Graphics Cards

Here are some of the key factors that you should evaluate when shopping for the ideal graphics card for your PC build.

  • Cooling Performance: When shopping for a graphics card, evaluating its cooling performance is crucial for ensuring optimal operation and longevity. Examine the quality and size of the heatsink, as a larger heatsink can prevent thermal throttling more effectively. Consider the number of heat pipes; more heat pipes generally indicate better heat transfer.
  • VRM Design: The VRM design is a critical component of the graphics card that must be considered. Look for a card with a high number of VRM phases for stable power distribution, which can improve overclocking potential. Checking VRM benchmarks is a great way to get an idea about the quality of a VRM.
  • Power Limit: An advantage of aftermarket variants is that they are free to customize the power requirements to suit their performance targets. Look for graphics card variants with an increased power limit, as that not only translates to better performance at stock settings but also allows for higher overclocking headroom and added stability in the long run.
  • Aesthetics: Aesthetics and design should not be overlooked when purchasing a graphics card. The visual appeal of a card can enhance the overall look of your PC build, and many models come with customizable RGB lighting for a personalized touch. Certain variants come with unique design features, such as an all-white exterior or customizable backplates.
  • Value For Money: Ultimately, the purchase decision rests on the price and overall value of a graphics card. Consider your budget and the card’s performance to find the best balance between cost and capabilities. Additionally, take into account factors like initial price, the card’s performance, and long-term reliability to gauge the card’s overall value proposition.

Gaming Benchmarks

To help you understand how well the RX 7900 XTX performs, we tested it against other graphics cards at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K to give you its rasterization and ray tracing benchmarks.

How We Tested & Picked These RX 7900 XTX Graphics Cards

Don’t forget to consider the following critical factors when shopping for a graphics card.

  • VRM: The VRM is responsible for supplying power to the GPU, and a high-quality VRM can help ensure a stable and consistent power supply. It is especially important if you plan on overclocking your GPU, as a poor-quality VRM can result in instabilities and even hardware damage.
  • Power Limit: The Power Limit is the range of power your GPU can handle while running different kinds of tasks. GPUs nowadays mostly come with the ability to overclock, but you need to ensure that your GPU has a wide array of flexibility in power input so that you can push it to its limits and beyond.
  • Cooler: Most vendors provide big GPUs like the RX 7900 XTX or RX 7900 XT with only two cooling fans or a low-quality heatsink at a reduced price. These things are ignored by customers when buying, which results in a huge loss in the end; this is all due to the GPU’s low cooling, so you should have a GPU that can handle the heat load easily.
  • Performance: Performance is the most crucial topic that each user asks about before buying a GPU. Small things like low cache or slow memory clock speeds are things most customers don’t know about, and even if they do, they don’t know how to test it before buying.
  • Temperatures: GPU temperatures are one of the many things that provide information regarding how good a GPU is. The cooling systems in GPUs nowadays are so good that they try maintaining temps around 65°C to 70°C even while running extremely high-end games.

You want a unique aesthetic with a stylish backplate: If you’re looking for a RX 7700 XT variant with a unique and vibrant aesthetic, the ASRock Phantom Gaming RX 7700 XT won’t disappoint you. The sleek metal plate also makes the GPU look more sophisticated and beautiful. The extra thermal pads on the back help with heat dissipation, too.

You require extra fans for more cooling: The ASRock Phantom provides three fans for more cooling. The graphics card doesn’t cross 65°C with moderate air cooling, showcasing the power of the fans. If you require such cooling, the ASRock Phantom Gaming RX 7700 XT is for you.

The LED switch allures you: If you’re a gamer like me who doesn’t like RGB all the time, the LED switch will entice you to make the purchase. There aren’t many graphics cards with such a feature, and the ASRock Phantom Gaming RX 7700 XT delivers fantastically with the switch.

Don't Buy It If

You have a small chassis: The ASRock Phantom Gaming RX 7700 XT is by no means a small graphics card. With a size of 328 x 140 x 52mm, the GPU will barely fit in ATX cases. If you don’t own an E-ATX case, I don’t recommend purchasing this variant, as you might have to spend more on a chassis.

You require power efficiency: While the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT isn’t the most power-efficient card, the ASRock Phantom variant requires even more power to function correctly. If you need more power efficiency, I don’t recommend going with the ASRock Phantom Gaming RX 7700 XT.

You need a subtle design: One of the pros and cons of the ASUS TUF Gaming RX 7700 XT is its subtle design with dull colors and almost non-existent RGB. If you’re planning to build a workstation PC with lots of graphical power, the ASUS TUF Gaming variant is made for you.

Don't Buy It If

You own an ATX case: If you own an ATX case, the ASUS TUF Gaming RX 7700 XT variant might not fit. The variant has a triple-slot design, making it extremely difficult to fit in ATX cases. Unless you have an E-ATX case, I don’t recommend the ASUS TUD Gaming RX 7700 XT variant.

You want a flashier build: Most gamers love RGB in their PC builds. Therefore, if you’re looking for a flashier build with better aesthetics, the plain look of the ASUS TUF Gaming RX 7700 XT might not be enough for your needs.

What Makes It The Best Value RX 7700 XT Graphics Card?

The 1440p gaming performance, overclocking capabilities, decent thermals, low power wastage, and great acoustics for a lower price are a few reasons that make the ASUS TUF Gaming one of the best value RX 7700 XT graphics cards. Moreover, the zero RPM feature, subtle design for workstation builds, military-grade capacitors for better power efficiency, and high-quality axial-tech fans also increase the value of the graphics card exponentially.

AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT Gaming Benchmarks

To showcase where the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT graphics card lands on the performance scale, I have compared a few graphics cards on 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolutions with and without Ray Tracing to give a full-scale comparison.

Important GPU Key Terms

  • DLSSDeep Learning Super Sampling is an image upscaling technique introduced by NVIDIA. AMD uses a similar technique called Fidelity FX Super Resolution (FSR). With the release of the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT GPUs, AMD has also introduced FSR 3.0, providing more performance and better image resolutions.
  • OverclockingOverclocking is a popular concept among many enthusiast gamers. The art of overclocking allows users to manually increase the boost clock speeds of their graphics cards, processors, and RAM. When overclocking a graphics card, you must be extremely careful as it can damage your product.
  • VRAMShort for Virtual Random Access Memory, VRAM houses all the essential shaders, graphical elements, and renders the graphics card accesses frequently.
  • Tensor CoresNVIDIA GPUs have tensor cores that help with DLSS. These cores perform numerous matrix calculations called tensor computations. Similarly, AMD GPUs utilize a similar technology called AI accelerators. Although not on the same level, the AI accelerators help with FSR.
  • Ray TracingNVIDIA and AMD graphics cards utilize RT cores and RT accelerators to create realistic lighting and shadows for better eye candy. Ray tracing is extremely GPU intensive, reducing FPS in many games significantly.
  • CUDA CoresCUDA cores are a set of cores found in NVIDIA GPUs that help with CPU processing by completing complex mathematical calculations parallel to the CPU. AMD uses similar cores called stream processors. CUDA cores help with graphical and mathematical calculations, making them essential for gaming and productivity tasks.

How We Tested & Picked These RX 7700 XT Graphics Cards

These are the vital factors to keep in mind when you’re in the process of buying a graphics card.

  • Performance: Before purchasing a graphics card, you must know how well it performs under several conditions. If you have a 1080p 144Hz monitor, you should buy a GPU that can provide 144 frames in the games you want to play at 1080p resolution. Similarly, if you have a 1440p monitor, you must choose a GPU that performs equally.
  • Cooling Capabilities: Besides the performance, you must also examine the cooling capabilities of the graphics card you’re interested in. If your intended GPU requires plenty of external cooling to maintain temperatures, its value drops significantly. To compensate, you will need to spend more money on case fans or liquid cooling.
  • Power Requirements: With better performance, you are likely to find higher wattage requirements. For that reason, you should always look into the power consumption of the graphics card you’re trying to purchase to ensure your power supply has enough juice to power the GPU. Lower wattage requirements can also mean lower temperatures.
  • Overclocking Potential One of the main differing factors in various graphics card variants is their overclocking potential. Mostly, a graphics card’s overclocking potential depends on that particular variant’s cooling capabilities and power delivery. If you’re an enthusiast who likes to push their products to their limits, you will want to overclock your GPU.
  • Aesthetics: While not the most critical aspect, pleasing aesthetics make your PC look better. Usually, the graphics card is the main highlight in a PC build, and the most attention is drawn to that component. Therefore, if your GPU has a subtle design, you will want to shift towards a sleeper or workstation-type build.

Gaming Benchmarks

The RX 7900 XT is an excellent option for 1440p to even 4K gaming, but how well does it perform against its predecessor and the likes of NVIDIA’s RTX 40-series? To find out, our gaming experts tested these graphics cards at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K.

How We Tested & Picked The Best RX 7900 XT Graphics Cards

Before you make a graphics card purchase, remember to factor in the following key considerations.

  • VRM: VRM or Voltage Regulator Modules are responsible for maintaining stable voltage flow to your GPU. Although most users might be oblivious to their importance, they play a huge role in determining the overall life-span and overclocking potential of your card.
  • Power limit: Speaking of overclocking potential, your card’s Power Limit also plays a huge role in affecting it. Cards with higher overall power limits allow users to push their clock speeds way past their limits as long as they are backed up with sufficient cooling.
  • Aesthetics: Aesthetics play an important role in selecting a GPU as well. While users prefer GPUs with illuminated sides and RGB linings, others might prefer a minimalistic, sleek, brushed, finished appearance for their GPU. That said, at the end of the day, it all boils down to personal preference.
  • Cooler: Every capable graphics card needs to be paired with an equally effective cooling system. For this, an optimal and efficient heatsink installed in a GPU is always recommended so the temperatures are controlled even in the highest workloads. Many brands offer additional cooling solutions for other models of their GPUs.
  • Temperatures: As mentioned previously, maintaining reasonable temperatures is crucial for a graphics card. Cards that operate at higher GPU temperatures are at risk of running into thermal throttling issues, reducing their overall performance as a result.

Stream Processors: 2048 | Boost Clock: 2755 MHz | Fans: 2 | Dimensions: 281 x 135 x 59 mm | Display Outputs: 1x HDMI 2.1a, 3x DisplayPort 1.4a | Recommended PSU: 550W | Power Connectors: 1x 8-pin PCIe

Pros

  • Excellent thermal performance
  • Impressive acoustic performance
  • High factory boost clock
  • Great for overclocking

Cons

  • Quite expensive
  • Takes up nearly 3 slots

The ROG Strix RX 7600 complies with the classical ASUS design language that is rampant across their product line. The aggressive design of the fan shroud is consistent with the angular approach of most ROG Strix products. The card is not overly complicated in terms of design features, and the RGB lighting is not too intrusive. The ROG Strix RX 7600 uses a two-fan design, despite being a fairly expensive variant of the GPU. However, the 2.9-slot heatsink array is extremely capable of keeping the RX 7600 GPU cool even when under heavy load. The card uses 4 copper heat pipes and a large direct-contact baseplate to whisk the heat away from the heat-generating components.

The 2755 Mhz boost clock provides a significant uptick over the factory clocks, and you can further squeeze more performance out of the GPU with manual overclock. The robust VRM design of the card is well-equipped to handle significant overclocking, and the expanded power budget is an added bonus as well.

WARNING: Overclocking can increase your GPU temperatures and power draw so make sure you have plenty of case ventilation.

✅ You want an effective cooling solution: The impressive cooling system implemented by ASUS, combined with unparalleled acoustics, elevates this variant to a high level.

Don't Buy It If

❌ You have budget constraints: The ROG Strix RX 7600 is a premium variant of the RX 7600 and consequently does not offer the best price-to-performance ratio.

What Makes It The Best Overall RX 7600?

Offering a superb cooling solution combined with an expanded power budget and solid overclocking potential, the ASUS ROG Strix Radeon RX 7600 is the best overall RX 7600 currently available.

Pros

  • Powerful cooling solution
  • 3 fan setup
  • Attractive RGB lighting
  • Significant factory overclock

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Large form factor

The RGB lighting is particularly impressive, as it spans a major portion of the card. The central fan looks quite nice with the lighting, especially if the card is installed in a vertical orientation. The side profile of the card also has a dash of lighting, and the overall look of the card is rather aggressive and stylish. Its extraordinary cooling solution is quite overpowered for a GPU with the power profile of the RX 7600. The Phantom Gaming 3X cooling solution makes use of a substantial heatsink assembly with an array of copper heat pipes to increase surface area. The card can take up around 3 slots thanks to the size of its heatsink.

ASRock has also improved the inner workings of the RX 7600 GPU by providing a more robust power delivery system. The upgraded 8+2 phase VRM design helps ASRock achieve a substantial factory overclock straight out of the box, and my testing confirms that you can reliably achieve stable overclocks on this graphics card manually as well.

For an expert opinion on the ASRock RX 7600 Phantom Gaming, we consulted our resident graphics cards specialist, Nauman Siddique.

“It’s the ideal choice for budget gamers seeking a top-notch 1080p gaming card with robust cooling and eye-catching D-RGB lighting”.

Buy It If

✅ You want better overclocking capabilities: The 8+2 phase VRM is quite robust, and the card has an expanded power budget to allow for finer overclocking control according to my testing.

Don't Buy It If

❌ You prefer a more compact GPU: The card is also relatively longer than most other variants of the RX 7600, which may raise compatibility issues.

What Makes It The Best High-Performance RX 7600?

The combination of extraordinary power delivery and overclocking potential with an unparalleled cooling solution makes the ASRock Phantom Gaming RX 7600 the best high-performance RX 7600 variant on the market.

PRO TIP: You can use the ASRock Polychrome RGB software to synchronize the lighting of this graphics card with your PC components.

Pros

  • Convenient compact size
  • Robust VRM setup
  • Acceptable thermal performance
  • Quite affordable

Cons

  • Mediocre noise levels
  • Lighting is not RGB

Sporting a rather simple design, the PowerColor Hellhound RX 7600 is not one that immediately stands out from the crowd. The lighting in the fans is restricted to only blue and amethyst colors, and the user can alternate between them by using a switch on the side of the card. The card has a very well-designed cooling solution with a smooth nickel-plated copper baseplate along with 3 copper heat pipes to maximize the heat dissipation factor. The card also features horizontal aluminum fins in the heatsink assembly, further improving the airflow patterns and thermal performance.

The power delivery is handled by a robust 6+2 phase VRM with Dr.MOS components, allowing you to practice your hand at manual overclocking in a reliable manner. In addition to that, the card does boast a minor factory overclock as well. The Hellhound also offers a Dual BIOS feature for added convenience.

PRO TIP: Using a PCIe Riser Cable is a great way to save some space and be innovative in a compact PC case.

Pros

  • Affordable price point
  • Decent thermal performance
  • Nice understated design

Cons

  • Unremarkable acoustics
  • No RGB lighting
  • Limited overclocking headroom

XFX has taken a very simplistic approach to the design of this card. The fan shroud is extremely subdued and understated, with a plain black look accentuated by silver accents. This design language with the lack of RGB might appeal to those who want to build a PC with an understated theme, like a workstation. Even though the heatsink array is quite basic in its design, it has been very well-implemented in this graphics card and covers all the main heat-generating components in an efficient manner. The direct-contact copper baseplate is a major contributing factor to the heat dissipation qualities of this card.

XFX has equipped this card with a dual BIOS feature which is a nice touch, and the factory overclock is a minimal yet welcome addition to the overall package. However, there is not a lot of GPU overclocking headroom offered by the SWFT 210 RX 7600 due to its limited power budget and mediocre VRM design.

Editor`s Note
Image

Despite the uninspiring overclocking potential of the XFX SWFT 210 RX 7600, it is still a perfectly viable purchase thanks to its superb price-to-performance ratio. The RX 7600 is a mid-range GPU aimed at value-hunters, and the XFX SWFT 210 variant takes the value proposition to the next level, even at stock.

Important GPU Key Terms

Here are some important GPU terms to know when shopping for a GPU in 2023:

  1. Cores: GPUs are comprised of multiple smaller processors, referred to as CUDA cores for Nvidia GPUs and Stream Processors for AMD GPUs. These cores handle specific tasks and contribute to overall performance.
  2. Clock Speed: The clock speed of a GPU indicates the number of data cycles it can complete in a second. It encompasses a range from a base clock to a boost clock, offering variability in performance based on workload demands.
  3. VRAM: Video Random Access Memory, or VRAM, is the dedicated onboard memory that feeds data to the GPU core.
  4. TDP: The Thermal Design Power, or TDP, represents the maximum amount of heat that a graphics processing unit is designed to dissipate under normal operating conditions.
  5. Overclocking: Overclocking involves pushing the graphics card beyond its original factory specifications to achieve higher performance. This can be done by increasing clock speeds or voltage.
  6. VRM: The Voltage Regulator Module, or VRM, regulates and supplies the necessary voltage to the GPU and other components on the graphics card. It ensures stable and reliable power delivery to support optimal performance.

How We Tested & Picked These RX 7600 Graphics Cards

Don’t forget to consider the following critical factors when shopping for a graphics card.

  • Cooling Performance: Before finalizing a purchase decision, it is essential to assess the cooling performance of a graphics card as it directly impacts its overall performance and reliability. A proficient cooling system guarantees that the graphics card functions within safe temperature thresholds, thereby avoiding thermal throttling.
  • GPU Power Limit: The GPU power limit is another differentiating factor among different versions of the Radeon RX 7600. It plays a significant role in determining the maximum power consumption and performance capabilities of a graphics card. A higher power limit provides additional headroom for overclocking.
  • Aesthetics: A well-designed graphics card, equipped with features like RGB lighting, can elevate the overall appearance of your system. Therefore, there is merit in choosing a graphics card that not only performs well but also resonates with your aesthetic preferences, as it contributes to the overall satisfaction and enjoyment of your PC experience.
  • VRM and Overclocking: Efficient power delivery to the GPU is heavily reliant on the Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) found on a graphics card’s PCB. A well-crafted VRM design becomes imperative as it ensures consistent performance, improves overclocking potential, and promotes the durability of the graphics card by effectively lowering temperature levels.
  • Price and Value: Making a wise investment in a Radeon RX 7600 variant entails considering its value for money. Opting for the cheapest variant may not guarantee the best overall choice, just as selecting the most expensive option may not necessarily be the wisest decision either.

Gaming Benchmarks

How We Selected These RX 6900 XT Graphic Card

Choosing the best Radeon RX 6900 XT Graphic Card among all the GPU and at the same time giving an unbiased opinion is hard without setting ground rules. Therefore, we’ve set ground rules that include measuring every GPU with some points to take care of in testing. You can take a peek at each one of the criteria to select Best RX 6900 XT Graphic Card.

VRM: One of the essential parts of the GPU is the VRM (Voltage Regulator Module), as it acts as a gateway that delivers power from PSU to all the components on the board, including the fans. A good VRM has more Power Phases to divide all the power load among different phases to achieve smoother power delivery.

Cooler: Cooler plays a critical role in the longevity of the GPU and consists of heat sinks, fans, and copper pipes. Different GPUs have different cooling performances because of different coolers like AIO, Water Cooling, and Air Cooling. Put simply, the GPU with the best cooler has a lot of room for overclocking and can attain higher clock speeds.

Performance: When purchasing a new GPU, performance reigns supreme. Assessing FPS, checking for screen tearing or frame drops, and gauging performance at maximum resolution, such as 4K for the Radeon RX 6900 XT, are crucial. Clock speeds indicate the GPU’s operational velocity. All of my picks provide reasonable performance for their price.

Temperature: Generally, a short-term high temperature will not hurt your GPU, but if the high temperature is consistent, it will for sure hurt your GPU and, in some cases, destroy the GPU completely. Users like us should also have an eye on temperatures, but it is the manufacturer’s responsibility to provide the best cooling hardware that does not overheat.

SAPPHIRE PULSE AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT

Specifications: Dimensions: 260 x 119.85 x 49 mm | Base Clock: 2321 MHz | Boost Clock: 2581 MHz | Bandwidth: 384GB/s | Recommended PSU: 650W | Power Connectors: 1x 8-pin + 1x 6-pin | RGB: No

Pros

  • Compact design.
  • Excellent build and aesthetics.
  • Top-of-the-line cooling system.
  • Enjoyable 1440p gaming at ultra settings.
  • TriXX Boost software support.
  • Dual-Bios switch.
  • Competitive pricing.

Cons

  • No RGB lighting.

Design & Build Quality: The Sapphire PULSE AMD RX 6700 XT comes with a rather compact design. The top-quality aluminum backplate protects the parts like capacitors on the PCB’s back and helps in the dissipation of heat from the PCB. Speaking of which, it includes a dense 14-layer 2oz Copper and a high TG PCB.

Cooling: For cooling, Sapphire has also integrated an excellent memory cooling solution that cools down the memory with an independent cooling module. The dual 95mm blades reduce air resistance and improve overall airflow. Furthermore, the fan’s airflow covers the entirety of the heatsink without producing a lot of nose.

Performance: Sapphire does not compromise on performance, even for a smaller-sized GPU. On top of the Base Clock of 2321 MHz, the PULSE Radeon RX 6700 XT allows you to overclock it to the Boost Clock of 2581 MHz. I also noticed that the default power limit has remained unchanged, at 230W.

PRO TIP: With TriXX software, you can not only tweak your card’s performance but also save custom settings for all your favorite games

Buy It If:

✅You want a smaller variant: The PULSE Radeon RX 6700 XT’s key selling point is its compact size, which enables it to fit in any PC chassis and leaves sufficient space for a CPU cooler, memory modules, and other components.

✅You want a well-built GPU: The PULSE Radeon RX 6700 XT is substantially more robust and resistant to bending because of its tiny size. An aluminum shroud that surrounds the entire GPU further shields it from harm.

Don’t Buy It If:

❌RGB lighting is a must for you: Sapphire has not added any RGB lighting; it seems fair, though, as the RGB lights would have increased the price.

What Makes It The Best Mini-ITX Radeon RX 6700 XT?

If RGB is not a big deal for you, then we suggest the PULSE Radeon RX 6700 XT as it is indeed the Best Mini-ITX Radeon RX 6700 XT thanks to its smaller footprint, decent cooling, and well-built structure.

Our Criteria For Selecting the Best RX 6700 XT

The criteria we considered before choosing a product as the Best Radeon RX 6700 XT are listed below.

  • VRM: Voltage Regulator Module is a component of any CPU or GPU, used to guarantee that the GPU receives all the power it needs to operate at a constant voltage. I’ve made sure to include options that haven’t compromised the slightest in terms of VRMs.
  • Power Limit: Manufacturers typically set two non-negotiable limits: the stock power limit, maintaining default functionality, and the maximum power limit, indicating the highest sustainable power input for overclocking without modifications. A higher power limit is important if you are interested in overclocking.
  • Cooler: Every GPU we considered for this listing needed to have coolers that could maintain the GPUs’ ideal operating temperatures while still being silent enough to allow for lengthy gaming sessions without interfering with the game’s audio.
  • Performance: Performance is paramount for an optimal gaming experience, directly impacting gameplay quality. We prioritize selecting graphics cards that deliver high and sustained frame rates, ensuring smooth gameplay even during intense sessions, while also maintaining safe temperatures.

Design & Build Quality:  With striking silver and black accents on the GPU along with RGB lighting on both the radiator and the front shroud, ASUS has done a brilliant job in terms of aesthetics. Build quality is also top-notch thanks to the use of premium capacitors, high-quality power stages, and a full-coverage cold plate.

Cooling: Since it is a Water-Cooled card, it comes with a 240mm radiator in a closed-loop design which adds a lot of heft to the overall weight. The small blower-style fan on the shroud takes care of cooling the VRM, whereas the 240mm radiator cools the entirety of the GPU itself. The water block has a copper baseplate for cooling.

Performance: Being a factory overclocked Radeon RX 6800 XT, it comes with a higher boost clock speed of 2360 MHz. For the VRMs, it has a 17-phase design in a 14+3 configuration. Of course, the beefier cooling system combined with the higher speeds will allow it to outperform most other variants of the RX 6800 XT.

WARNING: Make sure you have space for a 240mm radiator in your case before purchasing the Strix variant of the RX 6800 XT.

Buy It If:

✅You want higher factory overclocks: Its higher out-of-the-box clock speed is also a plus; however, that is expected from a higher-end card like this one.

You want extremely low temperatures: The main highlight of the ASUS ROG Strix LC AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT OC is obviously the hybrid design. The water-cooled Radeon RX 6800 XT provides lower temperatures than most aftermarket cards.

You want a space-efficient variant: While you will need space for a 240mm radiator with the liquid-cooled RX 6800 XT, you will save some space thanks to the smaller footprint of the GPU itself.

Don’t Buy It If:

You have a limited budget: Its price is the main drawback; with an MSRP of $900, it not only exceeds the price of the reference edition Radeon RX 6800 XT but also exceeds the price of some of the higher-end variants of the Radeon RX 6800 XT.

What Makes It The Best Water-Cooled RX 6800 XT?

The high out-of-the-box clock speeds, compact design, and excellent cooling performance make the ASUS ROG Strix LC AMD RX 6800 XT OC the Best Water Cooled RX 6800 XT.
