  • An analyst has said that Xbox is currently ahead of PlayStation from a pure content perspective.
  • The former has a major advantage heading into the holidays.
  • Xbox’s strategy of avoiding the console wars also appears to be working well.

Xbox has closed out 2024 with an incredible first-party release. Defying various expectations, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle has marked a major comeback for both MachineGames and Indy.

Whether it be the game’s quality or its optimization across PC and consoles, there’s barely anything to criticize in MachineGames’ latest offering. Following this release, analysts have also noted that Xbox is ending 2024 on a very strong note.

Why it matters: The company’s first-party lineup has never looked better, showing plenty of promise for the future.

Xbox Game Pass
Game Pass Continues To Thrive As The Year Comes To A Close

As reported by Variety, analyst Clay Griffin says Xbox’s momentum has placed it ahead of PlayStation. In particular, he noted that the gaming giant’s content offerings are stronger, giving it a major advantage.

This is mainly due to two major AAA offerings in the last quarter of 2024. Not too long ago, Black Ops 6 set franchise records and drove new levels of engagement for the Xbox platform.

With Indiana Jones and The Great Circle poised for similar success on December 9, Xbox is heading into the holidays with a more enticing lineup. The gaming giant also delivered notable titles like Hellblade 2 earlier this year.

Microsoft’s portfolio is quite a bit stronger than Sony’s.

-Clay Griffin

PlayStation itself had solid exclusive offerings this year, but the gaming giant seemingly lost momentum by the end of 2024. Between Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Astro Bot, Helldivers 2, and Stellar Blade, PS5 users had plenty to keep themselves busy this year.

However, the PlayStation portfolio can appear a bit dry in comparison when considering the fact that Astro Bot arrived in September, and nothing major has shown up since then.

Xbox Series X
The Xbox Series X Looks More Appealing Than Ever

Clay Griffin also says that the new content-focused strategy is better than the gaming giant’s previous attempt at winning the console race.

Xbox’s strategy of moving up the value chain is better than trying to out-console Nintendo or Sony.

-Clay Griffin

The next year has shown similar promise for Xbox, with Avowed, Fable, and Doom: The Dark Ages leading the 2025 lineup. PlayStation seems to have a few major first-party releases up its sleeve, with Ghost of Yotei expected to be the highlight.

All in all, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for both companies. What do you think about the analyst’s conclusion? Let’s discuss this in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.

PlayStation Secured GTA Exclusivity For PS2 Over Fear of Xbox, Says Former Exec https://tech4gamers.com/playstation-gta-exclusivity-fear-of-xbox/ Fri, 06 Dec 2024 17:57:55 +0000 https://tech4gamers.com/?p=289891 A former Sony executive has highlighted that PlayStation rushed to secure GTA exclusivity amid Xbox's impending threat during the PS2 era.

PlayStation Secured GTA Exclusivity For PS2 Over Fear of Xbox, Says Former Exec is a post from Tech4Gamers - All About Technology And Gaming News

Story Highlight
  • PlayStation felt threatened by Xbox’s entry into the gaming industry over two decades ago.
  • This led to the gaming giant pursuing exclusivity for various IPs, including GTA.
  • GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas launched as PS2 exclusives during the early 2000s.

The GTA franchise is unparalleled in its global popularity within the industry today. As evident by the reactions to the first GTA 6 trailer, this series has been a major part of gaming culture and entertainment for decades.

Much of GTA’s legacy is also tied to PlayStation. With fan-favorite titles like GTA 3 and San Andreas launching as PlayStation exclusives, fans on this platform have a long history with the series. According to a new interview, this relationship may never have existed without Xbox.

Why it matters: PlayStation’s early focus on exclusivity continues to bring positive results to this day.

GTA 3
Xbox Refused GTA 3 Exclusivity And Later Regretted This Decision

According to Chris Deering, the former president of PlayStation Europe, the company has always prioritized exclusivity.

PlayStation’s early focus on exclusives helped the PS1 become a standout success and ensured the PS2 sold 160 million units altogether. However, the company still felt threatened by Xbox’s initial entry into the industry.

As Chris Deering points out, Xbox’s threat compelled PlayStation to pursue exclusivity deals for various third-party IPs before the PS2 generation kicked off, and GTA ended up being one such franchise.

We were worried when we saw Xbox. A few of us went out to our favorite third-party publishers. One of these deals was for the next three Grand Theft Auto games.

-Chris Deering

GTA San Andreas
Rockstar Games Produced Back To Back Hits With The Grand Theft Auto IP

PlayStation’s agreement with Take-Two guaranteed exclusivity for three major releases, including GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. While all of these would later arrive on Xbox, the GTA series had already become synonymous with Sony’s gaming platform by that point.

This information becomes all the more interesting when considering that Xbox had previously turned down an exclusivity offer for GTA 3. Microsoft thought the game sounded too good to be true.

We’re Reaching A Point Where ‘Consoles Become Irrelevant’ Soon, Says Ex-Sony Boss https://tech4gamers.com/consoles-become-irrelevant-soon-sony/ Fri, 06 Dec 2024 14:15:34 +0000 https://tech4gamers.com/?p=289873 The former Sony Interactive Entertainment America CEO thinks that consoles might become completely irrelevant in the next generation or two.

  • Shawn Layden claims that we are nearing a point where consoles will become irrelevant as we know them.
  • The former Sony exec believes that the collapse of traditional consoles might happen in the next two generations.
  • Sony and Xbox have adapted to this dismal scenario by releasing their first-party titles on other platforms.

The concerns of modern consoles becoming trivial one day have been there ever since they came into power in the gaming scene. These fears have grown over the last decade as the differences between generations have become less noticeable. Now, gamers are not the only ones worried about this changing shift, as the former Sony boss also believes that consoles might become irrelevant soon.

He believes that this shift will happen in the next generation or two.

Why it matters: The words of the ex-Sony boss suggest that even the higher-ups are concerned with the traditional consoles eventually collapsing. We might see consoles become irrelevant in the next two generations.

Shawn Layden Featured
Shawn Layden also argued that PS launching games on Xbox is not worth it.

Speaking to Eurogamer in an interview, the ex-Sony boss clarified that we have already reached a point where the ‘innovation curve’ in console hardware ‘is starting to plateau or top out.’ Additionally, he thinks that Xbox and PlayStation are already close to the final console specs.

I think we’re at a point where the console becomes irrelevant in the next… if not the next generation then the next next generation definitely.

The difference between the console generations has become so small that noticing them is extremely hard unless you have top-range TVs and speakers. So, consoles becoming irrelevant is only a matter of time.

Xbox Series X Vs PlayStation 5
Xbox has already adapted to this grim scenario by adopting a complete multiplatform strategy.

Xbox has changed its strategy in a pretty controversial move to adapt to the changing times. On the flip side, PlayStation has also started releasing its first-party games on PC more often.

Do you think the traditional consoles will become fully obsolete in the next two generations, or did Shawn just discuss the most grim scenario? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the official Tech4Gamers forum.

PlayStation Handheld May Struggle Due To Lack of Console Experience Like Series S, Say Analyst https://tech4gamers.com/playstation-handheld-struggle-series-s/ Thu, 05 Dec 2024 19:45:08 +0000 https://tech4gamers.com/?p=289842 Analysts said that Sony could struggle with the PlayStation handheld due to having no experience with low-end consoles like the Xbox Series S.

  • Both Sony and Microsoft are working on a dedicated handheld seemingly to compete with Nintendo.
  • Analysts have concluded that the former could have problems in this market.
  • The PlayStation handheld can struggle due to the lack of experience with low-end consoles like the Xbox Series S.

Sony has been dominating the console market due to a lack of challenge from Xbox. The latter has completely changed its approach and doesn’t really care about console wars anymore.

However, both seem to be quite interested in the handheld market now. While Xbox has confirmed it is working on a handheld, Sony has yet to officially confirm it, but the sources that revealed this information are reliable enough to confirm the handheld’s existence.

While the gaming giant is interested in the market, it is likely to struggle due to having no low-end console experience like the Xbox Series S.

Why it matters: Xbox Series S forces developers (which many have complained about) to optimize their games according to its low-end specifications. This experience is what Sony lacks.

According to Digital Foundry, the upcoming Handheld by Sony could have trouble running PS5 games while the Xbox handheld can shine more. The Xbox Series S runs games at 720P or 1080P, depending on how demanding it is, which is the same as how a handheld would run it.

So, the developers are aware of the challenge especially when it comes to porting games to the Series S. So, this could give Microsoft an edge in the handheld market.

Sony never had an Xbox Series S that forced developers to make these low-end profiles for games, and in this case, if they bring out a handheld, I think it would be almost like a Sony VR2.

He further started that the handheld could have its own version of games after it comes out or via patches. So, this would make it a new lower-end PS5 that doesn’t have a full backward compatibility catalog.

Porting Games To Xbox Series S Has Proven To Be Quite Challenging For Developers

It seems possible that Sony can release patches for its game to work on a lower-end console just like it released for a higher-end PS5 Pro. However, as per the analysts, it will have troubles given having no experience with consoles like the Xbox Series S.

So, it will be good to see how the gaming giant manages to cross this hurdle. What do you think about the analysts’ comments on the matter? Do you think Microsoft has the upper hand? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.

Modern AAA gaming appears to be in trouble, with major executives and authorities highlighting red flags with the industry’s current approach. One such executive is Shawn Layden, who previously declared AAA budgets a major threat to the industry.

In a new interview, the executive has once again warned the industry. He believes that the obsession with making games longer and longer is a major problem and a mismatch in today’s time.

Why it matters: The gaming industry is currently haunted by layoffs and studio closures. Therefore, such warnings should not be taken lightly.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Shawn Layden highlighted that games cost around $150 million to produce during the PS4 generation. The average AAA production costs a lot more today, with success becoming less likely due to saturation across various genres.

According to the executive, the solution to this problem is simple. He argues that studios should focus on producing shorter games that can be created on small budgets. As per Shawn Layden, this would also be beneficial to the fans.

The former Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO argues that most gamers today don’t have too much free time on their hands. Citing his own example, he revealed that he has yet to play Red Dead Redemption 2.

Games are too long. Our approach is a mismatch to reality. I haven’t even opened Red Dead Redemption 2 because I don’t have 90 hours.

While Red Dead Redemption 2 is an incredible game in many ways, Shawn Layden brings up an interesting point about its length. For many players, this can prove to be a major hurdle.

PlayStation itself seems to be facing this issue, with each new game requiring bigger and bigger budgets to produce. Still, recent releases like Astro Bot have shown how PlayStation could mitigate the problem using Shawn Layden’s philosophy.

  • The former popular PlayStation executive, Shawn Layden, claims that Microsoft can’t build a bigger global market than Sony.
  • He argued that PlayStation is the biggest brand in 170 countries, while Xbox is nowhere near equal.
  • Shawn does not see a point for PlayStation to launch its games on Xbox because it comparatively has a smaller reach.

Ever since the days of Xbox 360, the disparity between Microsoft and Sony has only grown bigger over the years. The toe-to-toe rivalry between the giants ended last year, with brand CEO Phil admitting that Xbox lost against PlayStation. Now, the former SIE boss Shawn Layden also seems to have bluntly acknowledged the vast distinction between the two console makers.

The notable ex-PlayStation executive has claimed that Microsoft could simply never build a bigger market than PlayStation already has. He said that Xbox never had that kind of global reach in the first place.

Why it matters: The former SIE boss’ remarks suggest that PlayStation does not even consider Xbox an equal competitor anymore. Some found it obvious, while others think Xbox is being underestimated.

Sony has prepared more games for 2025 than it has currently revealed.

Speaking in an interview with Eurogamer, Shawn said that even if console hardware were to become redundant, Sony putting its games on Xbox still would not be a viable business choice. He claimed that PlayStation has been a leader in almost every generation.

[PlayStation] is the leading platform in 170 countries around the world. Microsoft never had that kind of global reach, so they could never build a global market to the scale that PlayStation does.

So, the global footprint that Sony holds is much larger than Microsoft could ever build. Shawn thinks the small addition to its game sales on Xbox would not be worth it—especially when fans already get upset when Sony launches its titles on PC.

Sony is possibly about to acquire the FromSoftware owner, Kadokawa, in the near future.

The former PlayStation executive also admitted that the brand has been through hard times and almost failed during the PS3 era. However, since then, the conglomerate has only grown in size and global reach to overtake Xbox.

Do you think Shawn Layden is being completely factual with his remarks in the recent interview, or does Microsoft still hold a shot at equal competition with PlayStation? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

  • He states that the gaming giant would hurt its brand value and have little to show if it tried this route.
  • The executive also admitted that fans would be upset by such a move.

Xbox changed the entire console market by shifting to third-party releases this year. The gaming giant’s entire lineup is now open to rival platforms like PlayStation and Nintendo, potentially the stage for a broader third-party focus across the entire industry.

PlayStation is currently going all-in on PC ports, and many have discussed the gaming giant potentially pursuing third-party releases in the future. Commenting on the matter, a former executive believes Xbox’s approach would not be worth the effort for PlayStation.

Why it matters: The gaming giant’s first-party library contains some of the industry’s best games. Therefore, Xbox fans would be more than happy to try a few of those IPs.

Shawn Layden, the former CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, was recently asked to share his thoughts on Xbox’s decision to aim for a wider audience.

According to Shawn Layden, Xbox could never reach as many people as PlayStation. He argues that even when the Xbox 360 was outselling the PS3, the former was limited to a few regions.

As per the executive, PlayStation’s broader appeal makes it the default gaming platform for people in 170 countries. Therefore, the effort of porting major games to Xbox consoles would not be worth it.

The former CEO also discussed the potential harm that would be done to PlayStation’s IPs in the process. He noted that fans are still not too happy with the gaming giant’s accelerated PC push, and it would be much worse if major IPs began to appear on Xbox.

Still, the gaming giant recently dipped its toes into third-party releases with Lego Horizon Adventures. The game was released for the PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC, with the PC port pushing the RTX 4090 to its limits.

During the same interview, Shawn Layden discussed how PlayStation bounced back during the PS3 era. He also commented on the current state of the industry’s budgets and creativity, topics he has never shied away from.

PlayStation 3 is widely regarded as one of the weakest generations of Sony’s consoles so far. It was outplayed by the Xbox 360 in all ways during the era, and former SIE boss says PlayStation was lucky to survive the PS3 era.

Why it matters: The PS3 had all sorts of issues, from an inflated price tag to lackluster titles at launch and development obstacles. It put PlayStation in a tricky situation that could’ve cost them a lot.

In an interview with Eurogamer, former SIE president Shawn Layden revealed the hurdles they faced during the PS3 era. He said they tried too many things with the console compared to the previous generations.

With PS3 they built a supercomputer and put Linux on it. All of these were risky moves but he’s glad they survived the time, and it taught them a lot, which eventually led to PS4, the second best-selling console the company has ever released.

Furthermore, he said that the PS3 experience taught them it’s not necessary to build everything in-house to manage costs. It’s fine to outsource certain components and get help from other parts manufacturers.

Ultimately, the PS4 helped Sony understand what the audience wanted; a multimedia-like experience that the Xbox offered. Despite its shortcomings, the PS3 ended up selling more overall units than the Xbox 360.

  • Fans have been demanding a remake or just a 60FPS for Bloodborne forever.
  • However, Sony has done nothing to show the fans that it has heard their request.
  • Now, during the PlayStation 30th anniversary trailer, it quotes and ends the trailer with ‘It’s About Persistence’ with Bloodborne in the background, angering its fandom.

There has been a massive demand for a Bloodborne remaster or a remake but Sony has chosen to continuously ignore its fandom. Despite that, fans have been hoping for a remake/remaster, and the recent rumors also played a huge part in that.

The game’s maintenance date was aligned with the PlayStation State of Play rumor, but it seems like fans were thinking too much about it. Recently, Sony released a 30th anniversary trailer for PlayStation and ended it with none other than Bloodborne, making a massive fandom furious.

Why it matters: While FromSoftware has acknowledged the fandom’s demand, Sony refuses to comment on it, and that has been frustrating.

Fans are now once again furious with Sony as they have been expecting to get an update regarding the game today. The footage used in the trailer is also from a pretty old trailer so the fandom was kind of confused and was thinking that it is maybe from a remaster or remake.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Reportedly Generated $3.8B In Revenue is a post from Tech4Gamers - All About Technology And Gaming News

Story Highlight
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) is reported to have made nearly $4 billion in its first year.
  • This figure seems like a typo, as it is just not possible for the title to have made this much amount with only shipping the base game.
  • However, if we consider the merchandising and console bundles then it might have been possible.

Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) instantly become popular thanks to Insomniac’s beautiful craftsmanship. The game sold over 33 million copies, which is pretty insane but isn’t that surprising if you consider its fandom thanks to comics, TV shows, and movies.

The game has arguably done wonders for Insomniac, and a new report reveals that it has made $3.8 Billion in revenue.

Why it matters: Marvel’s Spider-Man had a budget of $90 million, so its making nearly $4 billion in revenue is straight-up absurd.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2018 Revenue
The Report Suggests Insomniac’s Debut Spider-Man Title Was A Standout Success

This report comes directly from Kevin Kimbal who drove market leadership at Sony along with mentoring a large team. He also led the marketing for the Spider-Man game released in 2018.

I led the marketing efforts for Marvel’s Spider-Man, achieving a 971% sales surge in its first year, selling over 20M units globally and generating $3.8B in revenue.

-Kevin Kimbal

Someone who led its marketing rights mentions the game generating nearly $4 billion in revenue. However, the math here doesn’t add up. At that time, the game only sold 20 million copies, so there is no way that would account for $3.8 billion.

As of the latest update, it has sold over 33 million copies, and even now, it seems impossible for the title to make such an amount in revenue. This is without considering how many times the game would have gone on sale.

This could be a typo, but this figure could make sense if we also account for the console bundles and merchandising. Without that, it just doesn’t make sense, or it could be of the whole franchise as it has sold over 50 million copies altogether.

However, 50 million copies, even counting, without discount, would also not be enough, so the console bundles and merchandising have to be part of the revenue. That is the only way for it to make sense if we don’t consider it a typo.

Nonetheless, Insomniac has seen great success in the Spider-Man games. The recent title has also been praised highly and is heading to PC next year in January
